The definition of hui is a social/community gathering. This name fits so perfectly as our acronym because of how GEAR UP HUI strives to ease college freshmen into university life both academically and socially. Entering this new phase of life, college freshmen can initially feel lost finding there place on such a big campus. The HUI RIO prvides social networking opportunities for members to interact in an environment that promotes unity. Members come from all over the island creting a diverse face to the GEAR UP HUI RIO allowing any prospective members to feel welcomed. To join the RIO the applicant must have graduated from a Hawaii GEAR UP school or be pell grant elligible.
