Helping low-income students to reach their goals

As a HUI, we prioritize 'higher education' as our core value. Higher education opens up many opportunities in career paths. We want students to make their dreams possible and go beyond their limits by providing the resources, support, and confidence needed to succeed. We want students to know that they can major in any subject they are interested in and still work in the career path of their choice.

CORE VALUES

/

01

CULTURALLY DIVERSE

02

/

The nature of our program facilitates us to help students who come from low-income families to show them the benefits of going to college even if the idea seems far out of their reach. This in turn helps us to bring together a culturally diverse family of students, not just ethnically, but also personality-wise.

OUR HISTORY

OUR ROOTS

/

01

GEAR UP HUI started as a summer session program in the summer of 2012. This program gathered incoming freshmen from various schools in the hopes of giving these students a welcoming and positive experience of the University of Hawaii at Manoa. The students took an English class together, ate lunch together, and even participated in many afternoon sessions together to learn more about the university they will attend for the next four years. This summer session will be the first success of many for the HUI program. As a result of the success and bonds formed between the now-closely acquainted freshmen, we started our very own RIO in the hopes of keeping in contact with each other during the school year.

HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVE

GEAR UP stands for "Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness Undergraduate Program". HUI stands for "Hawaii Undergraduate Initiative". Put these two ideas together and you have a program that values the success of young adults who want to get ahead in life.

THE FUTURE

03

/

We hope that many more students will join our HUI family and continue to make it a success. We want students to feel proud of all the work they did during their stay at UHM and to show the rest of the world what they gained from the HUI program. We want to send our students off into the world having a clear image of what they want to do in their lives.
